With Every Winter Comes

after Lorine Niedecker

Will, once
the Fall leaves

the groundedness
of mess

with the grand fall
of the dutchess
stripped slowly
of her dress

what will you
see there, Will

through the cold
November rains

a hunchback
not quite straightened up
relieved of
all his pains

his x-ray
on a blue background
showing in black
his veins

Just know, Will,
this one fact that remains

that with every winter comes a will –
comes a Spring that strains.
